  3. If they are unconscious put them in the stable side position and monitor breathing.
  4. Notify those supporting them what they have taken, and be honest.
  5. Don’t leave them on their own. Make sure you stay with them until the medics arrive.

Obviously the only way to completely avoid the dangerous effects of drugs is to not take them. But if you’re going to…

WE ALWAYS RECOMMEND:

  1. Have a chat with a health professional if you are struggling with mental health
Messing around with your brain chemistry is risky, especially if you are taking medication for your mental health.
  2. Start small and go slow
Dosages are different for everyone so it’s best to start with a small amount and wait an hour to see how you feel. The effects can last for up to 7 hours and you may feel wide awake longer than that. People report feeling tempted to keep taking more but lack of sleep puts you at greater risk of hallucinations and psychosis.
  3. Avoid taking different substances at the same time
The mix of effects can be unpredictable so it’s safest not to take anything else (including alcohol). If you’re going to, check out our specific combination info at the bottom of the page.

WE ALSO RECOMMEND:

  1. Avoid stimulants if you have a family history of cardiovascular disease
Stimulants can cause strain on the heart. If you’re at all concerned, it’s a good idea to have a check up before considering taking amphetamine.
  2. Avoid snorting
Snorting substances damages the inner lining of your nose. If you are snorting, use a clean straw.
  3. Take regular breaks for snacks and water
It can be difficult to notice hunger or dehydration which can often be the reason for a bad time. Aim to drink 250 mL (a cup) of water per hour. Especially if you’re doing something that gets your heart rate up, have regular sit downs in fresh air with something to eat.
  4. Stay with trusted friends who know what you have taken
Amphetamine can decrease your inhibitions. You might say yes to something (or someone) you wouldn’t if you were sober. Look out for your mates!
  5. Ensure you have enthusiastic consent and safe sex equipment
Amphetamine can increase your sex drive. Make sure you have condoms/dental dams, lube, and most importantly – consent! If it’s not a fuck yes, it’s a fuck no!
  6. Plan an easy recovery
Most people experience low mood and motivation the next day. Make sure you don’t have any commitments and can catch up on sleep. Stay hydrated and try to eat well even if you don’t have an appetite.
  7. Wait at least a month between each use
Tolerance builds quickly and it’s important to give your body and brain time to recover. Using stimulants more frequently can negatively impact your study, relationships, mood, and finances.

REAGENT RESULTS

Think you’ve got amphetamine but haven’t had it checked with Know Your Stuff? Grab yourself some reagents from this website:

Here’s what the results should look like:

COMBINATIONS

Dangerous
  • MAOIs (a type of antidepressant) = too much stimulation and dangerous physical effects.
  • Tramadol = increased seizure risk.
Unsafe
  • Other stimulants (e.g. cocaine, MDMA, synthetic cathinones) = too much stimulation and lack of sleep can have negative physical and psychological effects.
  • Psychedelics (e.g. LSD, mescaline, mushrooms), or cannabis = increased risk of anxiety and paranoia.
Caution
  • Alcohol = stimulants masks the effect of alcohol so take care not to drink more than you can normally handle – the alcohol effects will catch up to you when the amphetamine wears off!
  • Opioids = stimulants also mask the effects of opioids which increases your risk of overdose.
